History

Johnson was established in 1988, and was named after Mary and Curtis Johnson. They were long-time educators here in Fort Collins.

Our mission is to "prepare today's child for tomorrow's world." We have been a strong community school for over 25 years. We offer a wide range of educational opportunities that include our core classes as well as a full menu of specials classes. Through our offerings, we are able to meet each child's academic needs.  We have a full spectrum of services. Additionally, we offer both before and after school enrichment opportunities that range from climbing club, to running club, to LEGO Robotics, to our Thunderbird Choir. The list is long.

For those families that need it, we also offer quality before and after school care through a licensed child care provider.

Like all schools in Poudre School District, we offer a quality education based on Colorado State Standards. We use district adopted materials in both literacy and math to support students in mastering these standards.

Learning Culture

At Johnson, we believe in addressing the needs of the whole child.  We pride ourselves on insuring a safe and healthy learning environment focused on academics.  We look for opportunities to engage and challenge each student as well as provide opportunities for students to explore gifts and talents.

Academic Environment

Our academic environment is focused on student mastery of the Colorado Academic State Standards.  To this end, all grade levels enjoy long uninterrupted blocks of time for literacy instruction and math instruction.

Students enjoy a weekly rotation of "specials" classes including art, media and technology, music, physical education, and counseling. These classes allow students to explore their creative interests and participate in art shows, concerts, track meets, honor choirs, and service learning projects.

Fifth graders have their own wing of the building. They have lockers and change classes in preparation for their transition to middle school.

Instructional Programs

Johnson provides a continuum of services to meet the diverse needs of our student population.  We have gifted and talented programming, a full range of services for students with learning disabilities, English Language Acquisition services for students needing to learn English, specialized literacy interventions, and specialized math interventions.  All of these services are in addition to core instruction and compliment the classroom setting.

Kindergarten students may attend morning or afternoon half-day classes or tuition-based full-day classes.  We have a preschool program as well here at Johnson.  For more information about preschool, please see the district's main web page for further detail.

Opportunities for Parents

There are many opportunities to get involved at Johnson.  We have a strong Johnson Parent-Teacher Organizations (JPTO) and our Johnson School Accountability and Advisory Committee (SAAC) if a parent or community member would like to provide leadership to our school.  There are also many volunteer opportunities. Johnson's incredible community spends thousands of hours each year helping our students and staff.  We average over 20 hours of volunteerism per day.  Parents can help in the classroom, work with small groups of students, prepare materials for instructional staff, offer after or before school enrichments, as well as many other options.  We value our volunteers greatly here at Johnson.
