Art

Art at Johnson

All students, K-5, at Johnson Elementary receive one full hour of Art instruction each week. The Art curriculum is aligned with National and State Standards for the Visual Arts. Lessons encompass the elements and principles of design, art history, and an introduction to various art tools, techniques, and processes.

Every year all grade levels experience working with a wide array of media, including drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and sculpture. All lessons incorporate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while fostering individual creativity. Art instruction integrates and supports other core subjects, including writing, math, science and social studies.

The art studio is set up for self-directed learning. Students access tools and materials independently to initiate and explore their artwork. Every student has a research workbook where they can develop a plan, sketch ideas, record research and reflect on their art.
