Principal's Welcome to 2019-2020
Dear Johnson families:
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I am excited to welcome each of you back and meet all our new families as well. Summer has brought physical changes for our building. Some of these changes are still in process and will hopefully be completed by the time we open our doors to children. We have updated our media center and are in the process of updating our lounge. Both spaces are used by so many people, and I am grateful to our community for funding these needed changes through our 2016 bond.
Below is important Back to School information with dates you will want to put on your calendar. We will continue to update our website with current information, so please visit us at https://joh.psdschools.org/ To get you started for this school year, I have put the beginning of the year calendar below. If you are wondering about class lists, these will be posted by 4:00 pm on August 16th. We have our welcome back ice-cream social sponsored by our Johnson Parent Teacher Organization on the following Monday. We hope you and your children will take advantage of this time to meet the teacher and begin meeting classmates.
Every new school year brings new staff. Emily McNamee and Kacy Wilms will join our 5th grade team. We have Ms. Breanne Mathias coming on as our new music teacher. Jacqueline Shoemaker joins our Integrated Services team as our new school psychologist. Ms. Sara Cawley joins our interventionist team to provide both math and literacy interventions. We are excited about all our new hires. Please introduce yourself and welcome them on staff.
As I stated above, I am excited to welcome you each and meet our new families! If you have questions, please contact our office at 970-488-5000.
Georgianna Dawson, Principal

Johnson Elementary School opened in 1988 and was named in honor of Mary and Curtis Johnson, two lifelong Fort Collins educators. We have been a long standing quality comprehensive school since then.
At Johnson, we believe in addressing the needs of the whole child. We pride ourselves on insuring a safe and healthy learning environment focused on academics. We look for opportunities to engage and challenge each student as well as provide opportunities for students to explore gifts and talents.
Our academic environment is focused on student mastery of the Colorado Academic State Standards. To this end, all grade levels enjoy long uninterrupted blocks of time for literacy instruction and math instruction.
Students enjoy a weekly rotation of "specials" classes including art, media and technology, music, physical education, and counseling. These classes allow students to explore their creative interests and participate in art shows, concerts, track meets, honor choirs, and service learning projects.
Fifth graders have their own wing of the building. They have lockers and change classes in preparation for their transition to middle school.
Johnson provides a continuum of services to meet the diverse needs of our student population. We have gifted and talented programming, a full range of services for students with learning disabilities, English Language Acquisition services for students needing to learn English, specialized literacy interventions, and specialized math interventions. All of these services are in addition to core instruction and compliment the classroom setting.
Kindergarten students may attend morning or afternoon half-day classes or tuition-based full-day classes. We have a preschool program as well here at Johnson. For more information about preschool, please see the district's main web page for further detail.
Opportunities for Parents
There are many opportunities to get involved at Johnson. We have a strong Johnson Parent-Teacher Organizations (JPTO) and our Johnson School Accountability and Advisory Committee (SAAC) if a parent or community member would like to provide leadership to our school. There are also many volunteer opportunities. Johnson's incredible community spends thousands of hours each year helping our students and staff. We average over 20 hours of volunteerism per day. Parents can help in the classroom, work with small groups of students, prepare materials for instructional staff, offer after or before school enrichments, as well as many other options. We value our volunteers greatly here at Johnson.
