Art at Johnson
All students, K-5, at Johnson Elementary receive one full hour of Art instruction each week. The Art curriculum is aligned with National and State Standards for the Visual Arts. Lessons encompass the elements and principles of design, art history, and an introduction to various art tools, techniques, and processes.
Every year all grade levels experience working with a wide array of media, including drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and sculpture. All lessons incorporate critical thinking and problem solving skills, while fostering individual creativity. Art instruction integrates and supports other core subjects, including writing, math, science and social studies.
Students have the opportunity to participate in art events to benefit the community, such as Empty Bowls and The City of Fort Collins Art in Public Places, as well as public student art exhibitions. Each year Johnson student artists are represented at the Superintendent's Art Show, the PSD Student Exhibition at the Lincoln Center, and Designs & Images at the Foothills mall. In addition to all district art shows, Johnson students' artwork has been on display at other local venues including Front Range Village, CooperSmith's Pub, and Whole Foods Market.
